SUMMIT University, Offa in Kwara State can now boast of a 500-seater ultra-modern lecture theatre courtesy of the chief executive officer of Caverton Helicopters, Mr. Remi Makanjuola in memory of his late mother, Alhaja Adiat Abegbe Makanjuola.

The event which took place at the Islamic faith-based university founded by the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria last year, attracted dignitaries including the president of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, SAN, chairman, Board of Trustees of the university, retired IGG, Musliu Smith, Dr. Wale Babalakin, SAN, first professor of geology in Africa, Prof. Mosebolaji Oyawoye, the donor’s wife, Mrs. Yoyinsola Makanjuola and their children, chairman, Thisday Editorial Board, Mr. Segun Adeniyi, Mr. Oba Otudeko, Maj-Gen. Tajudeen Olanrewaju, vice-chancellor of the institution, Prof. Hussein Oloyede, representative of Kwara State governor, Dr. Musa Dasuki among others.

Throwing light on the decision of his family to immortalise their late mother, Makanjuola said the idea started in 2005 when a merit award was conferred on his late mother by the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria which she joined decades back. At that ceremony, the idea of establishing a university was mooted and his mother donated N1 million to that laudable project. 13 years after, Makanjuola said he is happy that the vision has become reality with its registration by the National Universities Commission and commencement of academic programmes last year. He appealed to other well-meaning Nigerians to join the train in moving the newly established university to greater height.

In a chat with journalists, one of the founders of the institution, Alhaji Femi Okunnu said the past antecedents of the Society in establishing primary, secondary and colleges of education across the country prompted them to float the university which he said is the icing on the cake. Okunnu said the aim of the establishing the university is to contribute their quota to national development and a new Nigeria as boys and girls, women and men will receive the very best education.
On how the Nigerian education system can recover its lost glory, the legal luminary said if the government gets its priorities right and re-order the system, the country will be on its way to the top. Prof. Oloyede thanked the family for the edifice which has changed the landscape of the institution.

“Mr. Remi Makanjuola is a person who is committed not only to his mother and family but the society at large. His mother gave N1 million when the idea was first conceived and today, her son and the entire children have sustained her legacy, setting the pace for others. We are grateful to the Makanjuola family. God will continue to reward him. This is a major project and I hope it will open more doors.”
