29-yr-old man remanded in prison over rape

A 29-year-old man, Akinseli Joshua, has been remanded in prison custody by a Badagry Magistrate’s Court in Lagos after he was arraigned for raping a woman who is still receiving treatment at Badagry General Hospital.

Joshua was arraigned on a five-count charge bordering on rape, sexual assault by penetration, sexual assault, abduction and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

According to the charge, Joshua committed the alleged offence by unlawfully penetrating the private part of the victim using his finger and manhood, after he took her to 1, Iyaolabi Street, Ikoga, Badagry, Lagos.

Count four reads: “That you Akinseli Joshua and other still at large on January 18 at about 8:10a.m., at 1, Iyaolabi Street, Ikoga, Badagry, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, with intent to have sexual intercourse with the girl, took her away in one Altima 2.5 Nissan car with number plates MUS-339-EJ to aforementioned address without her consent and, thereby, committed an offence punishable under Section 226 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011 (as amended).”

However, when the charge was read to the accused before Magistrate Jimoh Adefioye, he pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Adefioye ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody, pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP, noting that the victim was seriously bleeding and is still lying in the hospital.
